Sawatdee!
I just thought I'd let you know how things have been for me this year.

It was early September this year when I decided to do something different and went to the Fordec Foundation in Bangkok as a volunteer to teach English to children during the long school holidays.They are children of low-income families and are unable to go anywhere except hang about the streets.

I was also teaching staff at Credit Unions which are becoming very popular and I applaud their work in making small loans available for ordinary people to set up a business a as street vendor and avoid begging. Some of them were very reluctant to learn at first but I assured them that their native language was first and the learning of English was only a tool to help them with their work.

I arrived when a military coup was underway and there were troops and tanks in the streets but most people seemed to be too busy to take much notice although the street did become very quiet at night which is not the norm for Bangkok.

I saw much poverty which greatly disturbed me and I felt so helpless because I know Thailand is not the poor country the people are led to believe but the wealth as usual is in the few hands at the top end. I did what little I could and will be going back sometime next year to Bangpoo Village for a while to teach English to orphans.

The money I earn from school and other performances in the UK helps me to do this work.
